Timestamping

VANguard’s Timestamping Service (TSS) records the date and time of an electronic transaction using certified time from the National Measurement Institute (NMI). An agency can use the timestamp as evidence of the date and time that a transaction was completed online.

The agency sends a request to VANguard for a timestamp token for electronic content. TSS then issues a hashed timestamp of the electronic transaction record.

To address privacy concerns, the transaction can still be timestamped even if the entire transaction content is not made available to VANguard.

Scenario

  • A business user conducts an online transaction with an agency.
  • The agency sends a request to VANguard for a timestamp token for electronic content.
  • TSS produces a timestamp token that records the electronic content in addition to the date and time of the transaction. The token is then returned to the agency.
  • The agency can use the timestamp as evidence of the transaction.
